The Descendants of William & Celia Walters 1794—2008

1794----2008
Barnesville, NC

From one family, William and Celia Walters and their seven sons and four daughters, settled in Robeson County near Princess Ann in 1794, their descendants have spread all across the United States.

In looking up the family tree, I have found that in a lot of cases all some people leave in this world are an obituary and a tombstone. Sometimes all we have to go on is that little piece of information that we have to search and find that was only printed once, and we search and resurrect that person’s life again. Like in the case of Haynes Johnson, I was sent his picture of him by a relative; he was born in Robeson County in 1860 and died in Robeson County in 1934. In searching for the obituary I found that over 1000 people attended his funeral at Barnesville Baptist Church. He was an outstanding and well known citizen to the Barnesville community.
Without finding that obit this info would have been forgotten forever.

Then there was David Israel who was born in 1843 and died in 1907, before death certificates were kept by each county. His obituary said that he awoke around midnight the night he died and ask his wife for some water, upon returning with the water, she said he was unconscious and he died early the next morning. This was in his obit in the newspaper in 1907 to be forgotten until this year when I went searching for it.

. One good example is Moses Warwick, this is one of the earliest families in Robeson County coming here before 1790 and settling in Orrum. All that is left is the cemetery in the field, a few grave stones and as you can see by clicking on the link below, it is all grown up. Usually the family cemetery was in view of looking from the home, out a window or a door. So as I visited this cemetery I tried to image where the home may have stood in relation to the cemetery.

Now Sit Back And Take A Trip Into The Past As You Learn More About Your Family.
Below are three pictures of Princess Anne in Barnesville, everyone who I have talked to that grew up there have said that they went swimming or learned how to swim at Princess Anne. How wonderful that must have been to swim in that same spot that William Walters Sr and his kids may have learn to swim. I never got that opportunity because my family moved from that area and now it is a state park. If you have never been to Princess Anne, I would encourage you to go, what a beautiful place.

We have come so far in the last 23 years, I can't believe it has been that long, we have learned so much about the family and there is so much more to learn, like who was the first Walters to come over by ship to America?

What it must have been like for William and Celia Walters to leave Dobbs County with their 9 children and travel by wagon
to Robeson County in 1795

William Walters was born circa 1750 in Dobbs County NC and died 1841 Robeson County NC. He moved from Dobbs County to Robeson County in 1795 and settled at what is present day Barnesville NC.
