Early Robeson County Families Early Robeson County Families

1787----2005
Focusing on the Townships of
Sterlings
Orrum
Marietta
Fairmont

I started working on my family tree back in 1979 at the age of 24, I traveled all over southern Robeson County, met and talked to alot of relatives, many have passed on now, hearing old stories, looking at old photographs and my life has been enlighten by it. Twenty six years has gone by now and we know so much more that we did, there is alot of history in this area of Robeson County and I have decided to make a web site on Early Robeson County Families focusing on these townships, Sterlings, Marietta, Fairmont, and Orrum. In looking up my Walters family I find that these early families knew each other and were connected so many ways, be it by marriage, selling or buying land or being a witness on a deed or will.

Surnames include: Walters, Warwick, Nye, Lewis, Page, Grimsley, Lowe, Loe, Purvis, Leggett, Floyd, Bullock, Barnes, Andrews, Barfield, Bass, Britt, Prevatte, Wynn, Campbell, Flowers, Griffen, Nichols, Hardin, Harrington, Herring, Ivey, Jenkins, Jerrigan, Johnson, Lawson, Shepperd, Bass, Sealey, Flowers, Williams, Regan, Brown just to name a few.

Today some families know a great deal about their roots; others know very little. Families tend to be scattered throughout the world. One of the goals of the "Early Robeson County Families" is to establish and maintain family relationships regardless of the miles and memories that separate.
"Early Robeson County Families" website is responding to the ever-increasing popularity of family research and genealogy. We are working to assist family members in sharing common goals and pursuits with their family history. We would like you to join with us and share in the fun of research, meeting new cousins and expanding your family. We believe that by working together and sharing our results, we can accomplish much more than by working alone.

We are working with family members across ancestral lines to develop a central depository for all of our family data. The possibilities are endless when we work together as one team.

In looking up the family tree, I have found that in a lot of cases all some people leave in this world are an obituary and a tombstone. Sometimes all we have to go on is that little piece of information that we have to search and find that was only printed once, and we search and resurrect that person’s life again. Like in the case of Haynes Johnson, I was sent his picture of him by a relative; he was born in Robeson County in 1860 and died in Robeson County in 1934. In searching for the obituary I found that over 1000 people attended his funeral at Barnesville Baptist Church. He was an outstanding and well known citizen to the Barnesville community.
Without finding that obit this info would have been forgotten forever.

Then there was David Israel who was born in 1843 and died in 1907, before death certificates were kept by each county. His obituary said that he awoke around midnight the night he died and ask his wife for some water, upon returning with the water, she said he was unconscious and he died early the next morning. This was in his obit in the newspaper in 1907 to be forgotten until this year when I went searching for it.

. One good example is Moses Warwick, this is one of the earliest families in Robeson County coming here before 1790 and settling in Orrum. All that is left is the cemetery in the field, a few grave stones and as you can see by clicking on the link below, it is all grown up. Usually the family cemetery was in view of looking from the home, out a window or a door. So as I visited this cemetery I tried to image where the home may have stood in relation to the cemetery.
